E. Flahavans & Sons, based in Kilmacthomas was honoured recently with an award for outstanding contribution to the Irish culinary sector at the Euro-Toques/Cavan Crystal Awards in Dublin. Flahavan's product was recognised as one of ‘exceptional quality' and was commended for ‘maintaining high production standards in keeping with traditional methods and environmental concerns.'
In receiving the award, John Flahavan who was accompanied by his wife Mary thanked Euro-Toques Ireland and said ‘he was proud and honoured to be the recipient of an award that reflected Flahavan's commitment to quality and environmentally- friendly production.'
"Flahavans' manufacturing processes burn the by-product of the oat to power the boiler, which generates steam for the cooking process. Electricity is also generated from the original millstream alongside the mill on the river Mahon in Kilmacthomas. The company also funds the recovery and recycling of packaging waste.”
Euro-Toques Ireland is part of the European Community of Chefs, whose members is asked each year to nominate the best food producers and suppliers in Ireland. Over the course of the year, the Euro-Toques committee visited producers and markets, spoken to fellow chefs, tasted products, and had long discussions to choose those it felt deserved to be honoured at their annual awards. The awards are given for outstanding contributions to Ireland's food culture and for those who make the work of Euro-Toques chefs possible. The 2007 awards were presented by celebrity chef and cook book author Neven Maguire at the Westin Hotel in Dublin.
